In a initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The new figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
