Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
